Ceiling fans has been around for more than a century since they were first invented in around the 1860s. The first ceiling fans did not have an electric motor to drive the fan. They were driven by a power system that comprised of a stream of running water along with a turbine and belts which turned the twin blades. These fans were costly and bulky and were popular in offices stores and restaurants. With developments in science and technology, electrically-powered ceiling fans were introduced in 1882. Over the years, ceiling fans have remained more or less the same in principle but have varied in shape, size and design. The different types of ceiling fan made over the years include cast-iron ceiling fans, Hunter “original” ceiling fans, stack-motor ceiling fans, direct-drive ceiling fans, hugger ceiling fans, spinner-motor ceiling fans, friction-drive ceiling fans and gear-drive ceiling fans.
By the 1920s, ceiling fans had become common devices in homes and offices. With the invention of air conditioning devices and their competitive cost, ceiling fans declined in popularity. However, their popularity increased in countries with warmer climates owing to reduced cost and energy consumption. The early ceiling fans featured only two blades. Later, fans were made with four blades, which made the fans quieter and more efficient. Today, a wide range of ceiling fans are available that are technologically more advanced, both in terms of circulation of air and power consumption. Currently, ceiling fans in the higher price range even come equipped with a remote control.
Ceiling fans have become an integral part of home décor and an energy-efficient way of cooling rooms. They are used in all rooms like bedrooms, living rooms, patios, kitchens, verandas and bathrooms – wherever cooling is needed. The advantage of ceiling fans over air conditioners is that they consume far less energy then air conditioners. They are also safer for the environment than air conditioners that use gases which can diminish the ozone layer. With open windows, they bring in cooler air naturally. They can also be used to blow warm air from heaters during winter.
Some of the popular brands of ceiling fans available in online stores include the Westinghouse Jewel ceiling fan, the Xpelair XIL 100 Wall Mount Fan, the Manrose Ceiling Fan, the Hunter Sontera Bright Brass Ceiling Fan, and the Blaupunkt Ceiling Fan.
