Dyson is a well-known company that manufactures vacuum cleaners. It was founded by James Dyson, who designed his vacuum cleaner after noticing a sawmill that used a spinning column of air to eliminate dust. James Dyson engaged all his efforts into producing a bagless vacuum cleaner, which through a process of cyclonic separation, produced a cleaner result with greater suction and better dust separation than any other vacuum cleaner manufactured before. Dyson’s determination was seen in his relentless efforts to make his dreams a reality despite his lack of financial backing and the need to renew his patent protection licence every year to protect his invention. It took him around five years and over 1,500 prototypes to obtain the first saleable model of Dyson’s dream machine.

Following the launch in Japan of his G Force Cyclonic vacuum cleaner (the first bagless cleaner), in the 1980s Dyson went on to produce more and more efficient cleaners which were then marketed and sold in the UK and subsequently the world over. With his fertile imagination and engineering genius, Dyson went on to produce washing machines and air hand dryers, but it was his vacuum cleaners that brought him fame and fortune.

A growing concern for the adverse effects of dust on breathing has made the Dyson vacuum cleaner immensely popular. The Root 8Cyclone cleaner which came onto the market ten years after the concept was first launched was one of the most successful products from the company. It had a full 45 per cent greater suction capability than any other machine. "Say Goodbye to the Bag" was a concept that was immensely popular with consumers.

An enormous amount of research combined with engineering skill and a practical approach has led Dyson to develop products that have become indispensable in households across the world.
