A modern household usually has several gadgets to make everyday life more convenient. Among a list of such gadgets, an electric clothes dryer is certain to feature prominently.
A clothes dryer needs to be cost effective, reliable and easy to operate. An electric dryer features a rotating tumbler, a heater (that heats up the air that goes through the clothes while they are tumbling) and an exhaust vent to release the steam.
Generally there are two types of rotating dryers: gas and electric. They both serve the same purpose but in a different manner. The objective is to increase the temperature of the air that flows through the tumbler. In an electric dryer, a coil wire gets heated with an electric current. The amount of electric current is adjusted depending on the air temperature required.
On the other hand, a gas dryer will use a gas burner (using natural gas, propane or butane) to direct a jet of hot gas into the main chamber of the dryer that holds the clothes. The jet of hot gas captures the ambient air and helps raise the air temperature. Gas dryers require electricity to spin the clothes.
Traditional dryers simply collect the ambient dry air, heat it and pass it into the tumbler. After which hot and humid air is simply released through the vent to make room for more dry air. The design is straightforward, simple and cheap.
The spin dryer is the most commonly used dryer. This type of dryer just spins the drum faster thereby extracting out the additional water from the clothes. It can extract the same amount of water in two minutes as a heated tumble dryer would achieve in 20 minutes. Though spinning alone does not complete the drying process, it saves a lot of time and energy amounting to substantial gains for big laundry operations in hotels, hospitals and laundrettes.
Other types of dryers include condensation dryers, heat pump dryers and mechanical steam compression dryers.
