It is your D day and you need to look great. You have invested in the perfect clothes, shoes and accessories. What about your face? Take a good hard look in your mirror and what do you see: a smooth face or a stubbly one? A smooth shave accentuates the facial features, especially the jaw line, and makes a man look neat and presentable. An electric shaver gives you a closer shave than manual shaving, and practically eliminates chances of cuts and scrapes. The electric shaver has a rotary or oscillating blade and does not require shaving cream, soap or water. Powered by a small DC motor it runs on rechargeable batteries. The earlier ones were powered by house current.
Lek-tro-shav was the initial model of electric shaver to be introduced in domestic market. Then the Vibro shave was introduced in mid 1920s that had a tiny magnet and spring in the handle. Both of these had to be connected to a light bulb socket for functioning.
Two types of electric razors are currently available in the market. The one with the rotary blade uses 1 to 3 circulating blades under a slotted head that rotates and cuts. The other – the foil shaver -- contains 1 to 4 rows of blades that move back and forth through a screen. There are single foil shavers meant for those with a slow beard growth or a new user. A double foil and triple foil shavers has two and three cutters that are covered by two and three screens respectively.
The next criterion for selection is power. While some are corded and take power from the main electrical socket, most electric razors nowadays are rechargeable. If you are a frequent traveller, look out for one without an adapter that works on universal voltage, has a proper travel lock switch and pouch. For those with skin concerns there are electric razors that come with a hypo-allergenic foil or ones that dispense a moisturizing lotion while shaving to give you a smoother shave. Waterproof models are available for use in the shower. The foil types are easier to carry around while the bulky rotary ones are best left home.
Electric razors come in all price ranges depending on the style, colour and features. A great combination of functionality and style, they come in colours such as purple, yellow, black and metallic finishes, ranging from funky to macho. A recent magazine survey shows that expensive models are found to perform better in comparison to the low priced ones. Users of electric shavers would vouch that these are quick and easy to use and are non messy.
