There is something special about eating food cooked directly over a flame, perhaps because the whole concept of cooking started this way. A grill is a grid of wire over which you can cook food with the help of gas, wood or charcoal. Grilling is a form of cooking that takes place through direct heat and can be known as barbecuing. There are many types of grills available on the market today. These include gas, charcoal, electric and the latest infrared grillers.
The invention of the hemisphere grill, like many inventions, was an accidental one. George Stephen was working as a welder for Weber Brothers’ Metal Works – a company that welded spheres together to make buoys. He loved to cook directly over a flame, but the Chicago wind was a problem. During one of his regular garden cooking sessions, the wind was particularly strong so he took one part of a buoy and welded three legs into it. Next, he used a shallower hemisphere as a lid. His basic and innovative “grill” caught on and, soon, he was selling it to neighbours and friends and Weber-Stephen Products Co. was born. The Weber-Stephens Products Co. sells some of the most innovative range of grills to this day.
A gas grill uses propane or natural gas. These grills are available in all sizes. A frame with wheels supports the grill as well and holds the fuel source. A frame may have attached side tables to hold the equipment, a drawer and a holder, depending on how big or stylish the grill equipment is.
The latest trend in grilling is an infrared radiant burner that gives out an even heat across the burner. Smaller pieces of meat can be cooked through the rotisserie method whereby a metal skewer is threaded through chunks of meat and rotated by an electric motor.
Charcoal grills, as the name suggests, use a natural lump of charcoal or bricks as their source of fuel. Those who like charcoal grills prefer the subtle, smoky aromas that add a different flavour to the food. Barbecuing is a method of cooking tough meat on a slow heat, while grilling is cooking tender meat using direct heat. Often the slightly burnt exterior adds a special aroma to the food. In North America, this style of cooking is called broiling. By choosing the type of grill that best suits your tastes, you can enjoy the special flavour of grilled food whenever you want.
