For discerning coffee lovers only the best will do. Keeping this in mind, Nestlé has introduced Nespresso to service the high-end coffee market. For the coffee connoisseur, perfection is mandatory.
Nespresso products include patented coffee capsules, the coffee-capsule technology and the Nespresso machine. It was in 1976 that the first patent application for extracting coffee from capsules of ground coffee was made. From 1986, the system was launched commercially and later was made available to every household.
Renowned kitchen equipment producers such as Krups, DeLonghi, Siemens and Magimix manufactured the early coffee machines designed by Nespresso. In 2000, Nespresso decided to become independent and started distributing its own machines.
Nespresso capsules for domestic consumption can be bought in Nespresso boutiques, via mail order or online and are only available in packs of ten. The Nespresso machines are sold in retail stores. The company also sells many Nespresso branded paraphernalia like coffee cups (the colours of some cups are from the Nespresso coffee blend range), capsule holders, spoons, sugar sticks, milk frother jet sets, serving trays and Amaretti biscuits.
Since Nespresso coffee is available only from select sources, the quality isn’t compromised. However, that means the prices are fixed at a much higher rate than loose coffee from other brands.
All Nespresso coffee is processed at only one factory in Switzerland. Thus Nestlé guarantees consistency in flavour across all the blends of this coffee, something a coffee lover would appreciate. Nespresso is a mix of arabica beans, which are used as a base, and some other stronger flavours that include robusta beans as well. The resulting coffee blend is unique making it difficult to identify the origin of the coffee.
Each Nespresso capsule can make exactly one cup of coffee. An espresso capsule contains around 5.5 grams of coffee while a lungo capsule contain around 7 grams of coffee. There are 12 premium blends of coffee in the Nespresso range and they come in different strengths. The 12 different capsules in the espresso blends range are Ristretto, Arpeggio, Roma, Decaffeinato Intenso, Livanto, Capriccio, Volluto, Cosi and Decaffeinato. In the lungo blends they are Vivalto, Decaffeinato Lungo and Finezzo.
Each year Nespresso introduces two new blends to add variety to their basket of special coffee. These are only available for a limited period of time. The new blends are sourced from a special region and their taste reflects the flavours of the region. The Ristretto capsule’s flavour perhaps comes closest to an Italian espresso.
