Waffle Iron is an appliance used to prepare delicious waffles. The honey comb pattern you see on these crispy waffles are created with the two hinged metal plates. Before baking the waffle batter, the plates are heated. The special non-stick coating on these plates ensures that the batter does not stick to the plates. Butter or oil may also be used to grease these plates to enhance the taste of waffles. Waffle irons come in different varieties. The earlier irons had tongs attached to wooden handles and were kept over an open flame, whereas the modern waffle irons use an electric heating element. Some irons make triangular, round waffles, while some produce square ones and even heart-shaped ones too. These waffle irons can also be used to grill sandwiches.
The first waffle iron can be traced back to the 1300s, where they were used in Germany and Holland. The plates during this time were used to impress designs like landscapes, coat of arms and various religious symbols on waffles. In the 1620s waffle irons were bought to America by the Dutch Pilgrims. It was Cornelius Swarthout, who embossed the first United States Waffle iron, in 1869. But, Thomas J. Steckbeck was the pioneer of the first electric waffle iron that he launched in 1911. The function and design of this electric waffle iron has till date remained the same but the appearances have changed a bit. Another interesting part of this waffle iron history is that Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, used this iron for a different purpose. The idea was creating a sole for a shoe that would be lightweight and still have a firm grip. His idea led to the creation called the Moon Shoe in 1972, which was used making the waffle-ironed rubber. The waffle idea is also applied in preparing cones for ice-creams.
Today, waffle irons are used across the world to prepare mouth-watering tasty waffles served with whipped cream or maple syrup. Belgian’s kinds of waffles differ, since they use whipped egg whites in their batter and hence, their waffles tend to rise a bit higher than normal waffles. Their irons are higher and bigger compared to the normal waffle irons. So bringing home a waffle iron and preparing some crisp, golden waffles would surely be a delicious idea.
