A cardigan is a jumper or sweater which has buttons or a zip at the front. Cardigans are often worn with a shirt or T-shirt underneath and are usually considered winter wear, although you can wear them in any season. Cardigans are worn by both sexes, but are mainly popular among women. They are comfortable, trendy and convenient to wear.
The name cardigan comes from James Thomas Brudenell, the 7th Earl of Cardigan and a British commander. The garment was named after him for his service in the Crimean war. Later on, the cardigan became popular in France and other parts of Europe especially with fishermen. Since then, the cardigan has become a favourite worldwide.
Cardigans are made of wool, acrylic and even cotton, and are often soft and light. Cardigans available now come in a range of attractive colours with a colour to suit everyone. They come with a closed crew neck or an open V-neck. They come with long sleeves as well as three-quarter length sleeves. You can choose from a huge variety of styles.
Cardigans often come with pockets, and buttons are important in making the cardigan look distinctive. Metallic buttons, shiny buttons and even wooden buttons look great and provide a fashionable look. Men’s cardigans are often made of wool and come in more simple shades than female designs.
The open front of a cardigan makes it a very versatile garment. A variation on the cardigan is the shrug, which consists of just sleeves and connecting fabric at the back and is ideal for warmth when you don’t want the garment underneath to be covered up. Cardigans can be warm, cosy, soft and stylish too.
