Manchester United Football Club, popularly known as “The Red Devils”, has been one of the most successful English football clubs in recent memory. Based at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, this soccer club has die-hard supporters all over the world. In 1878, this club was set up as the work’s team of the railway depot at Newton Heath. The original shirt designs were green and gold. The Red Devils became the first English club to claim the European Cup at the end of the 1960s. The Red Devils have won 18 major honours since 1986. They have been more successful than any other Premiership club in that period. This team has also won 11 FA Cup titles – more than any other team. Some of the all time greats who have played for Manchester United include Bobby Charlton, George Best, Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo.
When the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902, it also decided to change the home colours to red jerseys. Manchester United are referred to as The Red Devils due to the colour of these jerseys. Besides these red jerseys, the players also wear traditional white shorts and black socks. However, in the 1909 FA Cup final, Manchester United played against Bristol City wearing white shirts with small red v-necks. The traditional red jerseys now have a white broken vertical stripe pattern with black trim on the back. The Manchester United characters are visible on the stripe towards the bottom. The silhouette of the devil features towards the top. The AIG and Nike logos also appear in white on these jerseys.
The yellow and green shirts of the earlier period were chosen as the away kit in the beginning of the 1990s. Nowadays, white jerseys are worn for away games along with black shorts and white socks. The template on these jerseys resembles those on home jerseys except that it is black. There have been several other away kits used in the past such as the blue and white striped shirt worn at the beginning of the twentieth century. Manchester United also has an all blue third kit as a mark of respect to the victorious European Cup team of 1968.
The popularity of this football club has resulted in a strong demand for its clothing. Home and away shirts, warm up suits, and other items of clothing based on the Manchester United kit are much sought after by the numerous fans of The Red Devils. Some of the jerseys and kit are bought by fans as collectibles in homage to the memorable achievements of this club. Manchester United clothing and accessories can be purchased online and from various stores worldwide. Fans can buy the Uefa Champion League shirts with the official names and numbering of players. Various kinds of sportswear, kids’ clothes, celebrity shirts and light tops are also available.
