Newcastle United Football Club is among the oldest professional football clubs in the United Kingdom. The year 1892 saw the merger of two local football clubs, Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End, to form one of the premier English football clubs – Newcastle United FC. Known across the UK as “The Magpies” or “The Toon”, this club has been playing at St. James’ Park, their home ground, since the club was set up. Currently playing in the English Premiership, Newcastle United has had a glorious and successful club history with numerous titles. With four First Division titles along with six FA Cup titles, the club also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.
Over the years, Newcastle United FC has acquired a loyal fan base that is fierce and passionate in support of the team whether they are winning or losing. The club’s fans call themselves The Toon Army and eagerly await the local derby with Sunderland FC, another professional football club. Playing in their traditional black and white striped shirts matched with black shorts and black socks, the club is renowned for its free flowing football.
Newcastle United, like any other professional football club, has seen its fortunes fluctuate, right from being the winner of different league titles to being relegated to the second division of the English professional football leagues. All through this, the fans have stood firmly behind their team. Currently the club is trying to revive its fortunes in the English Premiership after going through some tough times recently. The responsibility of reviving the club has been given to the legendary Kevin Keegan, a former football player and a former coach of the club as well.
Today, the club has gained the reputation as one of the most entertaining professional football clubs in the United Kingdom, displaying attacking football, a style incorporated during the first stint of Kevin Keegan as the manager in 1992–1996. In fact during the 1993–1994 season the club was nicknamed “The Entertainers” by Sky Television. The fans and supporters of the club are spread across the globe and are always eager to buy club clothing and other accessories. Needless to say, the Newcastle United fans loyally endorse their club’s merchandise including Newcastle United’s traditional T-shirts, shorts, socks and other related accessories.
