Pyjamas remind us of our childhood and can be cute, cuddly and sublimely comfortable. Pyjamas are loved by all age groups and by both sexes. Our love affair with “jammies” begins right from childhood because of their appealing looks and comfort. Fondly known as PJs, pyjamas are loose and lightweight with cotton trousers that are tied around the waist with a drawstring.
Widely worn by men and women as nightwear, pyjamas were traditionally worn by South and West Asians. In the 18th and 19th century, they first appeared in Britain as an item of sleepwear. They were styled as a front buttoned jacket and trouser combination and replaced nightshirts by the early 20th century. They were made of a lightweight, non-stretch cotton material similar to that of bed sheets.
Pyjamas for modern women are made of sheer lace soft, smooth and cool cotton, cotton silk blends and flannel, as well as shimmering silk and satin. They can be bought as single pyjama trousers or as a two-piece set, in pastel pinks, lavender, ocean blue, or strong colours like mauve, magenta, fuchsia or black. The prints can be polka dots, pinstripes, floral or have a cartoon theme. They are styled as a vest or wrap-over top teamed with either matching or separate full length or capri trousers. The wedding collection also features camisoles with pyjama shorts and a matching robe or peignoir. Satin trims, ties, ruffles and laces are also sometimes added. You can mix and match comfy T-shirts, lingerie and tank tops with pyjama bottoms. From looking alluring to casual, there is a wide variety of nightwear to choose from.
Unlike women’s pyjamas, men’s are easier to select. Plain or pinstriped, sometimes with a contrasting trim on the cuffs, neck and pocket, these are available in bold shades like forest green, dark maroon, dark navy and pastel shades like sea green, ocean blue and light cream. The pyjama bottoms have an elastic waist. Some pyjama sets come with a matching robe to give an added luxurious feel. Silk, satin, flannel and cotton are the favoured fabrics.
Cute and colourful is the theme for children’s pyjamas. Favourite cartoon characters, animals, sports, polka dots or a bunch of balloons printed in pastel pinks, blues and yellows are perfect for little ones. Soft and smooth cotton is the best material for all, especially for babies and younger children. You can also opt for pyjamas with zippers instead of buttons for convenience.
A good night’s sleep comes on a firm yet soft mattress wearing comfy nightwear. You could opt for a different style every night and relax in comfort!
