A scarf is a piece of fabric that serves as a versatile clothing accessory. Scarves can be worn as a head covering or can be used to tie hair. Apart from being a handy fashion accessory, scarves can also provide warmth when tied around the neck. While scarves are used mainly to ward off the cold or as a fashion accessory, there are countries where scarves are worn for religious reasons. This is common in Islamic nations where it is obligatory for women to keep their heads covered by wearing a traditional head scarf called the hijab.
Scarves come in various sizes; from thin ones called bandanas that are usually worn over the head, to the large stoles, which can be wrapped around your neck and shoulders. Scarves are available in different fabrics and colours allowing you to mix and match them for every season or occasion. Scarves made from silks are amongst the most popular, while fabrics such as pashmina and rayon are also well-liked. Scarves lined with tassels and fringes can add a dash of style to any casual outfit. Scarves are very versatile and can be worn with shirts, sweaters and jackets, with or without collars.
The same scarf can be used in different ways to suit your style. With the exception of smaller bandanas and neckerchiefs, scarves can also be used as a drape or even as a waistband. The French twist style is formal yet stylish. The Ascot wrap style works well with collared shirts and blouses. Other styles include a hacking knot, a faux bow or simply a neck drape.
It is a myth that scarves are worn only by women as they can also add style to a man’s wardrobe. While women often choose bright flashy scarves with bold prints, men’s scarves are usually more formal, in plain colours for a stylish, yet professional look. If choosing a patterned scarf, remember that those with finer detailing tend to look better on men. Wearing a bright coloured plain scarf over a sober coloured shirt can completely transform an outfit.
