Launched in September 2003, the Athlon 64 is the first 64-bit processor from AMD which has been deployed for desktop computers and mobile computers. Originally, this processor was called the ClawHammer. The first Athlon 64 FX was based on the SledgeHammer ā the first of the Opteron processors. The chip became very popular as soon as it was launched. In fact, AMD found it very difficult to manufacture the chip in large enough quantities to cope with the demand. Initially, 100,000 chips could be produced each month and, even then, there was a shortfall in supplies. PC users quickly realized that the AMD Athlon 64 was as good a product as the Intel Pentium 4.
In 2004, AMD introduced new versions of the ClawHammer for the new Socket 939. In 2005, the Venice Socket 939 was introduced as a core revision while the San Diego Socket 939 served as another revised version of the Socket 939. Essentially, there are four variations of the AMD Athlon 64. These are the Athlon 64, the Athlon 64 FX, the Mobile Athlon 64 and the Athlon 64 X2. The Athlon 64 X2 is a dual-core design. The Mobile Athlon 64 was later re-christened the Turion 64.
The AMD Athlon single-core processor is the first 64-bit PC processor that is compatible with the Windows platform. It offers several other benefits. It is compatible with older 32-bit applications at optimal speeds and works with new and powerful 64-bit software applications as well. The latest version is even compatible with advanced operating systems from Microsoft, Red Hat, SuSE and TurboLinux.
The AMD Athlon 64 has a feature that improves the security of a system, which AMD calls Enhanced Virus Protection. The AMD Athlon 64 processor helps increase overall system performance with its HyperTransport technology. It also has a fully integrated DDR memory controller which helps improve the overall performance of a computer. Performance is enhanced with the help of a dual-core design even while a user is multi-tasking. It works at full throttle with 64-bit and dual-core technologies to deliver optimum performance in digital media and gaming.
The AMD Athlon 64 also has another exciting feature called Cool ānā Quiet Technology. This stifles the clock speed of the processor so that less energy is consumed by the computer and less heat is produced. A top performer like the AMD Athlon 64 allows you to control your digital world whether you are watching movies, playing music or playing games.
