Cakewalk is a company that specializes in the development of music production software. The company was initially known as Twelve Tone Systems, Inc. It manufactures an array of music software products including a virtual instrument called the Dimension Pro, a soft-synth studio called Project5 and the very popular music sequencer, SONAR.
The SONAR is the key product sold by Cakewalk. It has been created for professional applications and is used to edit MIDI and audio files. It also has a multi-track recording system. The SONAR can be used to create projects and this sequencer software application can also be used to listen to unedited audio tracks and other related information like lyrics. Additionally, a user can use the software to change tracks into a stereo WAV format, which can then be saved on a CD or a DVD disk.
The Project5 functions as an open platform for hosting free and commercial software synthesizers. In the Cakewalk online forums, an active and informative user forum has also formed around the Project5. Version 2 of the Project5 introduced an audio recording functionality and a “Groove Matrix” that allows the live performance of audio or MIDI groove clips.
Cakewalk was the name of their flagship product – a MIDI sequencer. Cakewalk was first launched for the DOS platform. Earlier versions of Cakewalk (until version 3.0) were primarily meant for the DOS platform, and they required the intelligent mode of the MPU-401 card. Versions of the Cakewalk after 4.0 relied on the dumb UART mode only. The Cakewalk was renamed the Cakewalk Pro, and then the Cakewalk Pro Audio when support for digitized audio was added.
Later, two versions of Cakewalk were produced called the Cakewalk Express and the Cakewalk Pro Audio. The Cakewalk Express was a smaller version with a 25 track limit and one MIDI port output. It was occasionally bundled with sound cards and other hardware. The Cakewalk Pro Audio provided complete audio support and limited support for music notations. It has a piano roll editor as well as a built-in scripting language, which is known as the Cakewalk Application Language (CAL).
