Cisco Systems, Inc. is an American-based multinational corporation that offers a wide range of communications and computer networking products. The company sells various kinds of routers, which handle the data traffic between two or more systems. Their vast product line also includes firewalls, switches, SPA phone adapters, cable modems and VoIP telephones. The name of the company is derived from San Francisco, a busy port and IT hub in California. However, the present headquarters of Cisco Systems, Inc. is in San Jose, California.
The company was established by Len Bosack, Sandy Lerner and Richard Troiano in 1984. Bosack and Lerner were married and employed at Stanford University at the time. Bosack developed existing multiple-protocol router software and Cisco was one of the first companies to sell multi-protocol routers successfully on the market. The largest routers designed by Cisco are mostly used for routing IP packets and MPLS frames. Cisco decided to go public in 1990 and figured on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The company started acquiring smaller companies over the years including the Cerent Corporation and Scientific-Atlanta. At the beginning of 2000, Cisco Systems, Inc. had a market capitalization of over US$500 billion and was among the most valuable corporate entities worldwide.
Cisco entered the home user market by offering VoIP products. However, it still offers a wide range of products for corporate clients as well. The company has also developed software products such as Cisco Fabric Manager, the CiscoWorks Network Management software and Cisco Emergency Responder. It also offers a range of switches, which come in futuristic designs that make them convenient to use. Cisco switches incorporate such advanced features as Application Intelligence for the optimum sharing of resources in a network.
Presently, Cisco products are manufactured and sold in five brands: Linksys, Cisco, Scientific-Atlanta, IronPort and WebEx. Linksys, one of their most popular brands, offers products for small offices and home users. Linksys products include broadband and wireless routers as well as high-performance equipment for VoIP and Ethernet switching. One of their most well-known products is WRT54G, a Wi-Fi capable home gateway that connects your domestic network with the Internet or a wide area network.
