Creative Technology Limited is a Singapore-based company that specialises in the manufacturing of multimedia products. It was founded on 1 July, 1981, by Sim Wong Hoo. The American subsidiary of the company is known as Creative Labs, Inc.
Starting as a computer repair shop, Creative developed an add-on memory board for the Apple II computer, which could enhance the sound played on the system. This memory board gradually developed into a stand-alone sound card. Later, Creative started manufacturing customised PCs adapted in Chinese. Sim Wong Hoo developed these innovative products and he turned Creative from a local shop into a multi-million dollar, multinational electronics giant.
In 1987, Creative released a 12-voice sound generator sound card for the IBM PC known as the Creative Music System (C/MS). It featured two Philips SAA 1099 chips. The next step was the Yamaha YM3812 chip that, with the successful Sound Blaster system, had enhanced audio capabilities for playing and recording digital samples. It was also the first to bundle together a digital audio, on-board music synthesizer, a MIDI interface and a joystick port. Sound Blaster Live! is an add-on board for PCs that use the EMU10K1 processor, which features DirectSound acceleration, EAX (Environmental Audio Extensions) 1.0 and 2.0, and a high quality 64-voice sample-based synthesizer.
A major change from its predecessor was that the EMU10K1 used system memory. This digital signal processor (DSP) could process audio potentially from any input and could add special effects such as reverb, flanging, or chorus to digital sounds. Previously, such functionality was limited to a MIDI output, but EMU10K1’s DSP could work with any source. Creative used this new ability to further enhance game audio and gave it the name EAX.
