A DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) rewriter is also known as a DVD recorder or burner and is a device that can record onto writable DVD media. DVD recorders are normally available as either installable hardware for computers or as stand-alone devices for studios and home theatre systems. Over a period of time DVD recorders have evolved along with DVD standards. Originally supporting one of three standards – DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD+RW – most current drives support both the “+” and “-“ standards.
DVD recorders function by using a laser to burn data onto a blank DVD. All DVD recorders can record from any analogue video source (most can also record video from digital camcorders via Firewire). The stand-alone DVD recorders normally have AV inputs and an onboard TV tuner for recording TV shows. DVD recorders come in several configurations: stand-alone, DVD Recorder/VCR combo, or DVD Recorder/Hard Drive combo units.
A DVD rewriter that is either an external add-on or internal DVD drive for a PC (like a CD-R/CD-RW drive) can record video and also read and write computer data and store it onto a blank DVD. Stand-alone DVD recorders can only record video from analogue video inputs and on most DVD recorders, from a digital camcorder via Firewire (the IEEE 1394 interface). They cannot connect to a computer for recording data files and typically do not come with drivers to interface directly with a PC.
Some companies manufacture DVD recorders that can record in all the current DVD formats: DVD+R/DVD+RW, DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. There are also DVD recorders that are able to record in DVD-R DL (double layer) or DVD+R DL (double layer) as well. Sony has stand-alone DVD recorders that can record in the DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW formats, while Toshiba and several others have introduced DVD recorders that record in DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. There are also DVD recorders that can record not only to DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW, but can also record to video and audio CD-R/CD-RW formats. There is no stand-alone DVD recorder that includes all formats. For PCs, a few manufacturers now have DVD burners that can write in all formats.
Besides recording capabilities, DVD rewriters are usually excellent DVD players. Most devices are similar to a stand-alone DVD player with progressive scan output, component outputs, Dolby Digital/DTS pass-through, and CD-R/CD-RW and VCD playback. Some of them also support CD-MP3 and JPEG still photo playback.
Moreover, DVD rewriters and recorders today also have 720p/1080i/1080p upscaling capability on the playback side. Since DVD recorders cannot record in HD as a standard DVD is not a high-definition format, the upscaling feature helps to match the pixels from the recorder’s output to the pixel resolution of a HDTV.
