LaserJet printers by Hewlett-Packard use dry electro photographic (DEP) laser marking technology. Electro photographic printing is also referred to as xerography. This technology is used to produce images on paper, film and similar materials. Today, electro photographic technology is incorporated into a wide range of equipment including photocopiers, laser printers and facsimile machines.
In 1984, HP introduced the first laser printer for IBM Compatible PCs. It was called the HP LaserJet and is now called the LaserJet Classic. It was a 300 dpi, eight pages per minute (ppm) printer. This printer was not good enough for graphics printing as it had a very low memory. It was only capable of printing a one inch, low resolution image at 75 dpi before running out of memory and it took about two minutes for the first page to print.
The world’s first mass market laser printer, the LaserJet series II, was introduced by HP in March 1987. Some of these printers are still in use as reliable workhorses in offices and publishing houses. The LaserJet II toner cartridge remains one of the most popular toner cartridges in stationery stores. The LaserJet II series is also the most recycled machine and is found in homes as a useful second-hand printer.
HP introduced its first colour laser printer in September 1994. The LaserJet 3100 was the world’s first mass market all-in-one laser and followed in April 1998. A year later, HP came out with the LaserJet 2100 printer series – the world’s first personal laser printers to offer high quality 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution without any loss in performance. By May 2006, HP had shipped a hundred million LaserJet printers. Today, HP has several lines of monochrome (black and white) and colour printers and multi-functional products as well (copy, scan, and/or fax included) that range from 20 to 55 ppm.
HP sells LaserJets in three categories - Colour LaserJet, Mono LaserJet and Multi-Function LaserJet. As of 2008, HP’s colour series included the Colour LaserJet 1000 series (up to 9000 series), the Colour LaserJet CP3500 series and the Colour LaserJet CP4000 Printer series. In Mono, it currently sells the HP LaserJet 1000 series, the LaserJet 4000 series and the LaserJet 5000 series. As most offices prefer multi-functional printers, there are currently many printers in this category including the Colour LaserJet 2000 All-in-one series and the latest HP LaserJet M1500 MFP series.
With over 20 years of experience in laser printing, HP has led the competition by innovation in printing, helping the user save money and time while executing their printing projects.
