Logitech is a Swiss company founded in 1981. Webcams from Logitech are becoming increasingly popular. The original Quickcam was developed in 1995 by Connectix, which was then acquired by Logitech in 1998. In its early days, the Quickcam was available for Apple Macintosh only. It connected to the Mac via a serial port and produced 16 shades of grey at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, recording video at about 15 frames per second (fps). Today, the Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 captures video images at a 1600 x 1200 pixels resolution and at 30 fps. After Logitech acquired the Quickcam series, it reduced support for Macs as Apple started building webcams into their desktops and notebook computers.
Webcams are small cameras that shoot images which can then be transmitted over the Internet. The first webcam was used in 1991 to capture images of the Trojan Room coffee pot in the computer science department of the University of Cambridge. The oldest webcam still in operation is the FogCam at the San Francisco State University and has been running since 1994. Initially used for video conferencing, it quickly became apparent that these cameras could be used in combination with the World Wide Web. This in turn spurred the demand for good webcams and the Logitech Quickcam has adapted itself suitably to suit various requirements.
Today, the Logitech Quickcam is a recognised webcam brand. There are many Quickcam products on the market with varying features. These include the QuickCam Pro 9000, which is a high-performance webcam with Autofocus, the QuickCam Pro and the QuickCam for Notebooks. Also on the market are the QuickCam Communicate STX with high-performance VGA optics even in dim light conditions, the QuickCam Deluxe for Notebooks, the QuickCam Go, the QuickCam Family, the QuickCam Chat, the QuickCam IM and the Quickcam Easy. The QuickCam Ultra Vision has a 1.3 megapixel sensor and the QuickCam Sphere MP features a motorised pan, tilt face tracking and a ultra-wide lens. The QuickCam Messenger has a built-in microphone and the Compare QuickCam Pro 5000 has a high-quality lens and an integrated microphone.
