Media Center is a Microsoft Windows application that provides an easy and visual interface with pictures, video, and music. It turns the PC into an all-in-one entertainment device where you can access music, photos, TV and movies with a remote control. It also offers built-in support for archiving TV shows directly to video DVDs, faster overall performance and an improved platform for content owners to deliver new online entertainment services and experiences. For US-based customers, Media Center also offers support for the digital cable service, by means of a digital cable tuner.
Media Center is available separately for users of Windows XP, but has been integrated with Windows Home Premium and Windows Ultimate. During set-up, Media Center automatically checks the PC for media files and indexes them and then updates every time new content is added or downloaded onto your PC. If the PC is equipped with a TV tuner card, Media Center can play back and record scheduled TV shows. After recording, it can burn the shows onto a DVD or portable storage device. Media Center can also stream live and pre-recorded TV shows to Extenders and Xbox consoles.
Media Center organises and displays music found on computers, which can then be selected for playback. Moreover, you can transfer music from your CDs to create a music library, burn a CD of your favourite playlists, browse music by album, artist, title or year and build custom playlists of your digital music for every occasion. You can also tune in to your favourite FM or Internet radio stations, buy and download music from online media services and add music to photo slide shows.
If you have a Certified for Windows Vista remote, Media Center allows you to enjoy your music collection throughout your home using a Xbox 360 or other Extenders for Windows Media Center and any connected speakers. Using wired or wireless networking creates access to your favourite music from the PC, even if another member of the household is using the computer in a different room.
Similarly, for movies, using Media Center you can watch movies on DVD and access movies from a list of content providers through Online Media – a portal that helps you enjoy movies over the Internet.
For Windows XP users, the final version of Windows XP Media Center Edition was the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (SP2) with the additional Media Center functionality. Media Center 2005 runs flawlessly on low-end hardware, such as a Celeron D with integrated graphics (256MB of video memory required to view HDTV content). Vista’s intense graphics require a more powerful computer though.
