Carl Zeiss is a renowned German company, which specialises in the manufacture of industrial measurement and medical devices. Founded in 1846, Carl Zeiss is best known in the industry for their optical products. The company is a subsidiary of the Zeiss group and its main business locations are in Heidenheim and Jena in Germany.

For example, the lenses can be fully auto-focused and have eight electrical contacts and distance encoders. The Carl Zeiss ZF lens series is manual focus and especially made for the Pentax K mount, although these lenses can also be coupled with the KA mount.
The Carl Zeiss ZS lenses are manufactured for the M42 lens mount which can be modified in order to make them compatible for use with most of the 35mm bayonet mounts like the Canon FD and EF, Pentax K and Minolta SR mounts. These Carl Zeiss lenses are basically manual focus and are similar in appearance to the ZF and ZK lenses.
