Digital cameras are colloquially known as “digicams” and are capable of capturing sounds, video, as well as still photographs. Photos and videos are recorded on the sensor of the digital camera which is light-sensitive. These photos and videos can then be stored in the digital camera. Sounds, images and videos that are captured using digital cameras can also be stored digitally on computers or other storage devices like pen drives and external hard drives.

These days, the sales of digital cameras have outstripped the sales of conventional cameras. This is because digital cameras offer a number of conveniences and features that are not available in traditional cameras. For example, after clicking a photo, the digital camera can display the image immediately on its in-built screen. This feature is known as ‘live preview’. Normal cameras can store only a few dozen photos, however, digital cameras can store thousands of images and hundreds of videos. Images and photos can also be deleted from digital cameras unlike the older, film-based cameras in which something like this was not possible.

There are several types of digital cameras on the market these days. Some digital cameras are built into other gadgets, for example, a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or a mobile phone. Perhaps the most sophisticated digital camera in the world is the Hubble Telescope. This digital camera is capable of capturing, recording, storing and wirelessly transmitting digital photographs and videos from outer space.

Bridge digital cameras are high-end digital cameras that look a lot like the older SLR cameras but have all the advanced features of modern digital cameras like Super Zoom Lens and Electronic View Finder (EVF). Other types of digital cameras include the Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera or DSLR. These digital cameras are essentially based on the simpler Single Lens Reflex or SLR cameras.

Digital rangefinder cameras are cameras that are able to measure the distance of the camera from the subject being photographed. Professional digital camera systems comprise high-end equipment that can be used in a modular fashion. Such sophisticated modular digital cameras are used in studios by professionals for commercial purposes. Line-scan digital cameras are used primarily for industrial purposes as they are able to rapidly capture data at high resolutions.
