The Nikon D80 is one the most advanced digital SLR (DSLR) cameras on the market, and blends the best of both point-and-shoot and pro DSLR cameras. Launched on 9 August, 2006, the D80 is aimed at professional photographers as well as serious amateurs. It comes with many more features than most models in the same price range.
Compact in design, this 10.2-megapixel camera features controls that are easy to operate even for an amateur. Its built-in 2.5-inch LCD screen eliminates the need to use the viewfinder and makes photograph composition very easy. Alternatively, you could use the fixed eye-level pentaprism viewfinder along with a built-in diopter adjustment.
The camera comes with the Zoom-Nikkor AF-S DX 18–135mm lens. Its five-area autofocus system makes it very easy to capture pictures in low-light conditions. The 3D Colour Matrix Metering II evaluates brightness, colour, contrast, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance for the best overall exposure value.
A mode dial on the camera provides several picture modes including Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Portrait, Macro Close-up and Sports. These modes help you set up the camera for different situations, ensuring excellent image quality each time you take photographs. The in-camera retouch feature includes image overlay, red-eye correction and D-Lighting, as well as monochrome and filter effects. Its playback function lets you view the captured images in a slideshow (Standard or Pictmotion), full frame or thumbnails mode. It also provides options such as zoom, highlight point display and auto-image rotation, which help to control the transition more effectively while viewing photos.
The D80 uses an SD Memory Card to store all images and supports higher storage capacity SDHC cards. With the SD memory card, the D80 can store around 2,700 pictures. Additionally, it is compatible with JPEG and uncompressed NEF formats.
Another important feature of the Nikon D80 is its USB 2.0 high-speed interface. The camera comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that allows you to photograph approximately 2,500 images on a single charge. It also has a gauge system to give you details of the battery status. In addition, the camera is compatible with i-TTL, TTL and non-TTL flashes.
