Many natural wonders can be viewed below the water surface of lakes, rivers and oceans. Underwater photography captures the amazing scenery as well any action that takes place. Whether it is a diver swimming or a shark attacking, underwater photography can capture it all. Several manufacturers such as Olympus offer a wide range of underwater cameras for this purpose.

Underwater cameras have simplified underwater photography to a great extent. With underwater cameras, you can capture the flora, fauna and the diverse marine life under the sea relatively easily. These cameras are specially designed for underwater use and can withstand both water itself and increased pressure beneath the surface. Water cannot seep inside the cameras since they have waterproof lenses and watertight bodies.

Underwater film cameras come with 15–35mm film. These cameras have a 20mm lens colour filter to minimise blue hues and produce natural and bright colours. With twin-lens cameras, one of the lenses is the taking lens which is used to capture the image, while the other is the viewfinder lens. The taking lens is well equipped to take photos from infinity to a close range and thus you get uncompromised picture quality. Telephoto lenses are also available for these underwater film cameras.

Digital underwater cameras have an advanced-dive control system which lets you manipulate the resolution, light sensitivity and exposure modes while under water. With an integrated zoom lens, zooming in and out is possible even under water. Integrated flash is available in both digital as well as film underwater cameras to shoot in low-light conditions. Some digital cameras have a built-in digital image stabilization unit. This unit eliminates blur caused due to shaking of the camera.

Waterproof housings and casings are also available for digital and SLR cameras that are not waterproof. Amphibious cameras are available with integrated sea mode and land mode, so can be used underwater as well as on land. Disposable underwater cameras that can take up to 30 pictures are also available. Underwater cameras can be used for underwater recreational sports like scuba diving and snorkelling. Apart from photographing flora, fauna and other marine life, underwater cameras can also be used to capture shipwrecks, underwater landscapes and submerged caves.
