Having a good sound system in a car always makes travelling more enjoyable and less tiring. A sound system playing music of your choice can keep you entertained through hours of driving wherever you are, and listening to your favourite radio channel or a CD relieves the monotony of being stuck in a traffic jam for hours.
Some cars come with an audio system fitted by the manufacturer and this is called the stock car audio. But it’s possible to customise the audio by upgrading the system to your requirements. For some, the right audio system in a car is essential.
The earlier tape decks became head decks or head units after CD, VCD and DVD players became common. Today car systems have developed to include the technologically advanced formats of MP3, Ogg, WMA and AAC. They can also receive signals from USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and DVD devices. An LCD screen is often included in the head unit or a separate flip down monitor can be installed on the roof of the car so that passengers can watch movies.
Speakers are placed in the front and rear of the car. These speaker sets include a set of tweeters, mid-range speakers and a woofer. They come in a combination of two or three speakers with an audio crossover that allows them to have the best possible sound. The woofer takes care of the bass.
The first car audio system was invented in 1930 by brothers Paul and Joseph Galvin for their Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. In 1932 Germany’s Blaupunkt and the UK’s Crossley also started manufacturing car audios. By 1952, Blaupunkt had invented the first FM radio which had the seek feature to search for various radio stations. In 1964, Philips came out with the compact cassette. The speakers that were installed were for home use and didn’t gel with the temperature and the vibrations of a moving car. Today there are speakers that produce a sound pressure level of 100 decibels within a car.
Car sound systems have evolved and now have many features like controls on the steering wheel and sleek, rounded head units. CD players are remote controlled and have a multiple CD changing unit. Some car sound systems also have large buttons so it’s easier to operate without getting distracted. The display panel too is large and often tells you at a glance all the information required. Nowadays, a high-end car sound system has many advanced features like audio processors, equalisers, mobile videos, cables, crossovers, car computers and game consoles.
Extra features can add value to a sound system. However, a good sound quality is of utmost importance. For good quality sound, a powerful amplifier and separate tweeters are necessary. A separate sub-woofer further refines music. It is important to place the speakers properly for the best effect. Trying out different speaker positions is always a good idea.
