A cassette player is a device used to play sound from cassettes. Generally, there are two types of cassette players – decks and recorders. A cassette deck is part of a stereo component system without speakers, while a cassette recorder generally includes an amplifier and speakers. The deck is usually perceived as a high-fidelity system and the recorder is considered to be a low-fidelity device. The main advantage of the recorder is that it is portable.

In 1963, the Philips Corporation released the first cassette recorder and started marketing it in 1965 as a vocal dictation device. The speciality of this device was that it recorded sound on a tape. The tape was enclosed by a case and this helped eliminate the need to thread the tape onto the individual spools, which used to be a tedious job. The new cassette player contained tapes about 4mm thick. The sound quality of these cassette players was suitable only for voice or dictation.

During the 1970s, cassette decks gained immense popularity amongst music lovers as well as professionals. There were many advantages of using these cassette players such as fast forward and rewind functions, a compact size, reduced sound disturbance and better sound quality. The main advantage was that these cassette players could be used in automobiles and this was an instant commercial hit. Cassette players used in cars and homes were later enhanced with another important feature – a radio receiver, which enabled the users to enjoy radio broadcasts. Another significant feature called an auto reverse was added to these cassette players, which enabled the user to switch the sides of the cassette without having to take out the cassette from the player.

The cassette player became a viable, high-fidelity option due to the improved sound quality and its compact design compared to LPs. They required less maintenance and offered space to display information on the cassette cover. These covers included fold-out sleeves and sheets instead of the single sheet visibility of the LPs.
