Freeview is a service that offers free digital TV and radio channels via your TV aerial and a Freeview set-top box. In the UK, Freeview offers 40 TV channels and 25 radio channels. There are no monthly subscription fees or installation charges. You are required to just pay a one-off nominal subscription fee.
Freeview covers almost all areas of the UK. You are given the option of choosing a digital box, a digital TV recorder or a digital TV. A digital box is the easiest way of viewing channels since it works in with your existing TV. A digital TV recorder can record and play back Freeview with ease while a digital TV has a built-in set-top box which can broadcast all Freeview channels.
Freeview is owned by DTV Services Ltd. The BBC, ITV, BskyB, Channel 4 and National Grid Wireless are all shareholders. Launched in 2002, Freeview has now entered 80 per cent of homes in the UK. You can access a host of channels such as BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC 3 and BBC 4, the ITV channel series, Channel 4 and 5, Sky 3, E4, More4, Film4, UKTV History and Virgin 1. News channels offered by Freeview include BBC News, Sky News, Sky Sports News and BBC Parliament.
