The MiniDisc is a data storage device, much like a CD or a DVD, but much more compact, and therefore, with more convenient portability and storage. The MiniDisc was released by Sony in January 1992, but at first was exclusively used for music storage and playback.

Later in 1993, MD data, or MiniDisc data, was introduced by Sony and this could store computer data as well. However, this format was not particularly successful because the blank MiniDiscs could not write audio MDs and hence were not compatible with the available MiniDisc players.

MiniDiscs made a comeback in 2004, and this time they were released in the Hi-MD format. The Hi-MD format has a huge data storage capacity of up to 1GB, and can also record audio MiniDiscs. Furthermore, the format allows you to record data as well as audio on the same disc. This has resolved all the problems faced by the earlier MiniDisc. Apart from being a versatile storage device, Hi-MD also allows more recording and playback time. With the Hi-MD, you can transfer data from a computer to a MiniDisc and vice versa. Even the recording of audio is in a much better format and, hence, the Hi-MD gives CD-quality audio.

In 2005, Sony released the next generation of Hi-MD. This supported the MP3 format, and thus was even more versatile. In the same year, Sony introduced the Hi-MD Photo, through the Sony MHDZ10P Walkman. This had a 1.3 megapixel camera that could save the pictures in Hi-MD.

Hi-MD is still, however, most widely used for audio recording and playback, and data storage and transfer. Hi-MD offers gapless playback, CD-quality audio and is perfect for live audio recording, as the format records the entire audible, human frequency range. Hi-MD also has a speed control option, which helps you slow down the audio without making any alteration to the pitch. For added convenience, most Hi-MD walkmans also include a remote control.

Compared to other digital audio players, Hi-MD accepts batteries that can be easily replaced. Most of these players use the standard AA size batteries. Several other MiniDisc accessories can also be purchased online.
