A portable DVD player or a PDP is an electronic device, which can play the contents recorded on DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs). Portable DVD players allow you to watch movies and listen to songs recorded on a DVD while on the move. LCD screens approximately 7 to 12 inches in size are often used as an additional feature with portable DVD players. The screen can rotate 180 degrees to assist the user in making adjustments while watching films. Some screens can also be folded flat.

PDPs are likely to become even more innovative in design with more features. They will have higher resolution screens, which will allow a high-definition display of graphics and images and will also support the new Blu-ray disc (BD) format. Blu-ray discs are the latest optical data storage mechanisms. BDs looks quite similar to CDs and DVDs but have a storage capacity of almost 50GB.

Portable DVD players also support Secure Digital (SD) cards. An SD card is a non-volatile flash memory device manufactured by Matsushita, SanDisk and Toshiba. It is used as a data storage disk which can be used in portable devices. SD cards are extensively used in digital cameras, camcorders, mobiles, PDAs, game consoles and even GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers. The storage capacity of these cards is in the range of 4 to 32GB. When they are used in a portable DVD player, they can then increase its storage capacity.

Today, high-end portable DVD player models also have iPod docks. The conventional iPod stores data in an internal hard drive while other models make use of flash memory for data storage. When connected to a portable DVD player, an iPod can be put to many uses such as transferring files, listening to music, watching videos and copying data.

Portable DVD players are also available with USB (Universal Serial Bus) sockets. USB is a serial bus interface that is commonly used to connect one device to another. It plays a major role in improving the plug-and-play capabilities of portable DVD players. It has emerged as a standard socket interface that enables the connection of multiple devices to laptops, PCs and now even portable DVD players.
