The VCR or Video Cassette Recorder has undergone a huge revolution ever since its inception. In the early 1970’s when the Vertical Helical Scan (VHS) format was introduced, the Video Cassette recorder was the only source to play back VHS tapes on television. They were also used to record Television programmes on to a magnetic tape. Today you have VCR’s with a digital tuner to automatically tune into the desired channel from which you wish to record.
When the VHS gained popularity in the 1980’s several people were enthralled and they picked up a whole lot of cassettes of their favourite movies. But with the advent of DVD players, those with a huge library of VHS tapes might feel a bit disappointed. But then there is no reason to be, as there are VCRs that have kept pace with technology, and more importantly are much cheaper than DVD players.
Modern VCRs come with a host of features. The Auto clock set allows VCRs to set their own clock from a signal from your local station. You don’t have to set the time, or reset. Even in case of power disruptions, the moment power is restored, your VCR will display the correct time.
Some VCRs also have a commercial advance feature. This simply means that when you record any programme from the television, it is recorded along with the commercials. However, when you play it back, the VCR automatically fast forwards the commercials.
There are also editing features like assemble editing, insert editing and video dubbing options in certain VCRs.
Most VCRs have hi-fi sound, which is true stereo sound and it is better to have a hi-fi VCR, as almost all recent movies feature hi-fi, Dolby Digital soundtrack.
Programmability is a major factor you must consider, if you are looking for a VCR primarily to record television broadcasts. Most VCRs have a VCR plus+ that allow you to programme by just entering a number from a TV guide, or even from newspapers television guides. These VCR plus + models also facilitate easy changing of channels via a mouse, blaster, or an infrared transmitter that is located on top of the VCR.
With so many options available in the VCR segment, and with so little time to watch all your favourite programmes, the VCR will be an ideal choice to record your favourite shows and enjoy them at your convenience.
