M.A.C cosmetics or Make up Art Cosmetics was launched in 1984 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo in Toronto, Canada. Frank Toskan was a make up artist as well as a photographer, while Frank Angelo was the owner of a chain of hair salons. At that point of time, conventional cosmetics did not hold up very well to studio lights but M.A.C cosmetics held up well against heat and glare on models being photographed in studios.
In 1998, Estee Lauder acquired M.A.C cosmetics from the original founders of the company. Their broad products offerings include cosmetics for lip, face, eyes and nail and fragrance for men and women. M.A.C also manufactures cosmetic eyelashes. The reason behind M.A.C cosmetic’s success is that they offer a wide selection of cosmetics to suit each individual’s specific requirement. For example; their lipsticks have 160 shades and eye shadow have over 150 shades. Each of these shades is available in different textures for every skin type. This diverse range of cosmetics provides something for every one, and it accommodates all skin colours and types. Say you have a glossy skin type and a certain eye shadow was required to give a slightly matt finish, M.A.C cosmetics has the colour and the texture for that specific requirement.
M.A.C cosmetics do not make the user uncomfortable nor do they irritate the skin. They do not require frequent touch ups and can be used for a longer duration than any other cosmetics. The richness and texture of M.A.C cosmetics remains consistent over a period time. The skin breathes well and colours remain lustrous throughout a hectic day at work.
M.A.C does not actively advertise their products and prefers word-of-mouth publicity for their sales. Their products have been endorsed by celebrities such as super model Linda Evangelista; pop stars Boy George, Elton John, Christina Aguilera, Diana Ross and Hollywood celebrities like Pamela Anderson, RuPaul and K. D. Lang.
M.A.C cosmetics have launched a diverse range of programs which benefit the community and the eco system as a whole. One such initiative is “Back to M.A.C” which is a recycling programme. Any used M.A.C product container can be sent back to a M.A.C store or counter and the customer receives a free lipstick in exchange.
