The Philips shaver was designed in 1939 by Philips as an electrical shaving device for men. The Philips shaver was born out of the necessity for providing a quick and easy shave without the danger of handling blades and preparing for a shave by lathering the face with shaving cream or shaving gel.

In 1966, Philips introduced the triple head Philips shavers and these continue to-date. In 1980, the company introduced the Lift & Cut Philishave shaver which lifted the hair seconds before it cuts the hair providing a closer and smoother shave. By 1952, battery-powered shavers were introduced which allowed users to shave on the go. Battery-powered rechargeable shaver was launched in 1965. Subsequently, floating-head shavers that allowed the shaving heads to move according to the contours of the face were also introduced. This was followed by shavers that released Nivea crème for men while shaving.

The latest Philips shavers provide flexible heads which adjust to the contours of the face while shaving and are waterproof too. These new shavers also provide a washing and lubricating base which not only wash the blades but also lubricate the blades to provide for a faster, smoother and clean shave each time.
