Xanax is a popular drug used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, panic attacks as well as an adjunctive treatment for symptoms of clinical depression. Xanax XR is an extended-release form of Xanax and is also sold over the counter.
The drug Xanax, in the form of Alprazolam, was originally formulated by Upjohn (a pharmaceutical manufacturing firm) in the latter half of 1969. Upjohn has since become an important division of the Pfizer group. Belonging to the benzodiazepine category, this drug was mainly formulated to help patients suffering from panic attacks or disorders caused due to anxiety.
Before Xanax was commercially released, some patients with panic disorder symptoms did not find any relief using other drugs or medical treatments that were prescribed for such problems. Before the benefits of benzodiazepines were discovered, tricyclic antidepressants were often recommended for patients suffering from anxiety. Later, David Sheehan, a psychiatrist by profession, got Alprazolam patented as a panic disorder drug. He had already observed the effect of benzodiazepines on patients who came to his clinic with panic or anxiety-related problems. Sheehan saw some potential in this drug and this foresight helped him promote Alprazolam as an effective treatment for panic disorders and for anxiety disorders in general.
The drug had a huge potential commercially because so many people were lacking effective treatment for panic disorders and related conditions. Sheehan eventually turned his patent into a profit-making business as soon as Alprazolam got its approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Xanax is generally used for treating symptoms of anxiety over a short period of time. It can prevent the onslaught of tremors or any kind of convulsive symptoms including panic attacks and nervousness. The prescribed dosage of Xanax should be no more than 4mg per day. Even in the case of patients who suffer from extreme cases of anxiety, physicians generally only prescribe Alprazolam in the form of Xanax for short-term usage. Both Xanax and Xanax XR should be taken in a fixed dose as prescribed by a qualified medical practitioner such as a physician or a psychiatrist.
