The German consumer products company, Braun Gmbh , is best known across the world for its cutting-edge consumer products. These include: grooming and beauty products such as electric shavers, razors and epilators; oral care items like Oral B toothbrushes; wellness products like thermometers and blood pressure monitors; kitchen equipment like coffee makers, toasters and blenders; and clocks and calculators.
Established in 1921 by engineer Max Braun, the company had a humble beginning with a small engineering shop in Frankfurt that made radio components. In eight years, the company had grown and moved to new premises where it began making radio sets. Braun was initially well known for manufacturing high quality radios, optical equipment, slide projectors and sound systems.
In 1950, Braun launched its most popular product – the electric shaver. Though designed in 1938, its production was delayed due to World War II and it was only introduced onto the market in 1951. The S50 electric shaver had an oscillating thin cutter with a stable steel foil mounted above it. To date, this technology is used in all Braun shavers , albeit with greater technological advancements. The Braun brand has since been associated with modern German design techniques that combine functionality and technology. Braun shavers are considered to be the world leaders in personal care, thanks to their innovative design, ergonomic features and aesthetics. They undergo strict tests to match the highest industry standards. Specially designed shaver heads undergo stringent quality tests on “hairy conveyor belts” similar to facial contours. The results are then evaluated with the help of cameras.
Braun’s triple action system has set new standards in shaving. Its Clean & Charge shaver is also considered to offer breakthrough technology that offers a “superclean” shave. The Pulsonic shaving system comprises an active shaver head with a movement of over 10,000 micro-vibrations per minute. With just a touch, power transmitted to the shaver head stimulates the skin and makes it ripple, thus enabling the shaver to offer the closest and most comfortable shave. The Pulsonic’s unique Sensoflex system automatically moulds to each individual’s face. Each Braun shaver model including the Pulsonic system – the 360 degree Complete, the SyncroPro, the Contour Series, the SmartControl3, the FreeControl, the CruZer and the PocketGo – are packed with unique features.
In 1967, the heirs of Max Braun decided to sell the majority of their stake in Braun AG to The Gillette Company. In 1984, the company was taken over completely by Gillette. In 2005, Procter & Gamble (America’s 25th largest company with 23 brands under its umbrella) acquired Gillette.
