Many people around the world suffer from anxiety disorders, panic attacks, insomnia, restlessness and convulsions. It can prove a daunting task for people suffering from such conditions to find a proper solution. Diazepam is an oral pill that can help combat these conditions. Diazepam (available in a liquid form) can also be injected into the blood.
Dr Leo Sternbach, who worked for Hoffman-La Roche, invented Diazepam in 1963. It has been in existence for over 40 years and is one of the most popular anxiolytics. It belongs to the family of benzodiazepines, which are anti-anxiety drugs and was originally known as Valium. It is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs for anxiety disorders and is part of the Essential Drugs List compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO). This is a list of minimum medical supplies a health care organisation should have. Diazepam is widely used as a sedative for anxiety-relieving purposes.
Diazepam works by acting on Gamma-Amino Butyric Acids (GABA) which are receptors in the brain. GABA acts as a neurotransmitter i.e. a chemical that the brain and nerve cells use for communication. Excessive GABA activity could lead to imbalance in the brain, which could result in anxiety and other psychological disorders. In such cases, Diazepam acts as a nerve-calming agent, reduces anxiety and induces sleep.
Diazepam is also administered before surgery, especially in case of endoscopies. This helps relieve tension and stress in a patient. In some surgical procedures, Diazepam is used after the surgery for its amnesic properties. This can prove really helpful for patients who need to recuperate after they have been through a traumatic situation like an accident. It is also used to combat psychiatric conditions like manic depression, delirium, hallucinations, insomnia, nightmares and sleep walking by reducing symptoms of anxiety. Agitation and shakiness arising from acute alcohol withdrawal can be brought under control with Diazepam. Furthermore, it can be used to control conditions like convulsions, seizures and fits caused due to high fever as well as epilepsy. Muscle spasms caused due to tetanus shots or poisoning can also be controlled by Diazepam.
