DKNY, which stands for Donna Karan New York, is a brand of innovatively designed and phenomenally popular clothing from the legendary New York based fashion designer Donna Karan. Having “New York” in the brand name is a tribute to Donna Karan’s clothing store in New York, which is the flagship store of the brand. The brand DKNY is not just confined to New York but retails all over the world. Apart from the primary stores in London and Manhattan, New York, DKNY has a total of 70 shops across the globe.
Donna Karan was born in Ivy Faske in October 1948 and was brought up in Hewlett. This remarkable fashion designer did her two-year course in clothing design after graduating from high school in 1966. She joined Anne Klein and chose to be a part of the Klein’s team until 1989. Some of her early innovative designs when she was associated with Klein’s team include Seven Easy Pieces and The Essentials Line.
The origin of DKNY as an innovative garments and accessories company dates back to 1984 when Karan and her husband, Stephan Weiss, decided to augment luxury and comfort into clothing designs. Started with complete confidence and belief, DKNY has reached out to a wide range of people and, today, DKNY has emerged with multifarious product lines including jeans, pure, DKNY Juniors, DKNY Active, DKNY Underwear, DKNY Kids and DKNY Baby. Shares of the DKNY Company were opened to the public in 1996. The popularity of the brand was at its peak in 2001, when DKNY was bought over by Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton (LVMH), a French luxury firm.
Initially, Karan had personally involved herself exclusively in the design of garments for women and she continued to do this for about eight years. Later, in 2001, Karan also ventured into designing men’s garments as well. The men’s line of clothing from DKNY includes shoes, casuals, formals, sportswear and suits. The beauty collection from Donna was launched in 1992 and the fashionable bedding product line was rolled out under the label DKNY Life. DKNY has also launched indigenous skin care products and fragrances in the last couple of decades. Karan has also been involving herself in charity initiatives like Urban Zen. In 2008, she organized the sale of her personal accessories and antique items at the studio of her late husband for charity purposes.
