As the name suggests, eye shadow is used to create shadows and depth around the eyes so that they stand out and appear larger. An eye shadow is applied as a cosmetic, under the eyebrows and on the lids of the eyes and sometimes underneath the eye too. An eye shadow attracts attention to the eye and highlights the beauty of the eyes. Eye shadows are available in a variety of colours, shades and textures as well as in powder, pencil, liquid and mousse forms.
These days, eye shadow is considered a female cosmetic, but there was a time when men also used to apply eye shadow along with rouge and other cosmetics. Even today, actors in films may wear eye shadow. The distance between a woman’s eyelashes and eyebrows is almost twice as big as the distance between a man’s eyelashes and eyebrows therefore eye shadow works especially well for women to enhance the eyes. Dark or black eye shadows are worn by both sexes especially in Gothic or punk fashions where men sport eye shadows of all hues.
People across the ages have worn eye shadow. Eye shadow can be used for professional reasons. For example, eye shadow helps to accentuate the expressions of people on stage, in film and on television
Eye shadow can be applied in a number of ways using a damp sponge, with the fingers or with the help of a cosmetic brush. Blending is the key to applying the eye shadow properly. Often three shades of eye shadow are applied together to achieve the best effect and they must all be blended properly. Usually, an eye shadow base or primer is first applied which prevents the other hues from smudging. Next, the base or medium shade is applied, then the darkest hue of the same colour is applied to the lash, and this is blended all the way to the crease of the eyelid. This is followed by applying a highlighter or the lightest colour underneath the eyebrows and sometimes underneath the bottom eyelashes. Finally, the eyeliner and mascara is applied. To remove the eye shadow, a face wash or an eye make-up remover can be used.
