Hair, as they rightly say, is the crowing glory of us humans. Nothing looks more beautiful than a cared for ‘mane’. There are several products available in the market that can add to the look of your hair. Hair bleach is one of them. It is a process done to turn your hair a shade or two lighter than its original colour.
Hydrogen peroxide or ammonium persulfate, an oxidizing agent, is usually the primary ingredient in hair bleaches. Post application, most hair bleaches will work with oxygen present in the atmosphere reducing melanin, the pigment that gives hair its natural colour. Bleaching, contrary to popular belief, is different from hair colorants. While hair colour serves to add permanent or temporary colour to your hair, hair bleach renders it a golden blonde or platinum blonde colour.
When done safely and with proper care, bleaching your hair produces good results. Good hair bleach should ideally contain 20% peroxide for on-scalp bleaching. In case of hair foiling, bleach with 40% peroxide content should be used. A common misconception is that more peroxide in the bleach makes its colour lighter. This is not true as a greater presence of peroxide in the composition can do more harm than good to your hair. A patch allergy test before you begin the bleach application should be undertaken in order to ensure suitability of the bleach with your skin. If instructions on the bleaching kit are followed, you can be assured of good results. Also, leaving the bleach on the hair for long can cause hair to turn rough and dry, so you must keep a check on your watch.
Bleached hair requires a lot of special attention and care as hair tends to lose a lot of its natural moisture once bleached. To avoid dehydrated, dry, and lacklustre hair, deep conditioning is essential and special shampoos for bleach-treated hair must be used. You can also nourish your bleached hair with hair spas and other special hair care products.
