A hair trimmer can be a humble pair of scissors or an electric hair trimmer. The choice of hair trimmer depends on the type of hair that needs to be trimmed, the amount of hair that must be cut and the regularity of trimming required.

Leo Wahl patented an electromagnetic clipper that he invented at the beginning of this century. The Wahl Clipper Corporation is an Illinois based company that produces grooming products.

The company was founded on the strength of Wahl’s patent. Later, Wahl was responsible for inventing the vacuum hair trimmer which ensured that hair didn’t fall onto the floor or body after it was trimmed. The very next year, in 1967, Wahl invented the cordless hair trimmer which meant that people could trim their hair without the nuisance of wires getting tangled. Almost twenty years later, Wahl produced the first cordless hair trimmer for moustaches and beards. By 2001, the company had released the first cordless vacuum hair trimmer.

These days there are many different types of hair trimmers. For example, there is an outliner hair trimmer which is used for defining the beard line or the hair line and trimming hair around the ears. A micro hair trimmer is used to trim very fine hair that most hair trimmers cannot reach. There are smaller and sleeker hair trimmers for female nose hair and others for shaping eyebrows. Cordless hair trimmers are also available. These trimmers can operate for several trimming sessions without frequent charging. Most of them are equipped with rechargeable batteries. Small, sleek and lightweight hair trimmers are available for travellers. Women’s hair trimmers for removing facial hair or shaping hair at the bikini line are also available. Special hair trimmers are also available for hair that appears on curves like the back of the neck, on the arch of the wrist or areas where there is unsightly hair growth.

Most people tend to think that a hair trimmer is similar to a shaver. While both are used to remove hair, one of the main differences is that a shaver cannot function as a hair trimmer while the latter can be used as a shaver if required.
