Valium is a drug which was developed by Dr Leo Sternbach in early 1960. It was used to provide relief to people suffering from ailments like back pain, insomnia and stress. The drug was called “valium” because in Latin the word means “strong” or “well”. In 1963, this drug was approved for use and soon became widely used among general practitioners and mental health professionals. It was the most prescribed drug in the US from 1969 to 1982. During the 1970s, the Roche Group was selling about two billion Valium pills a year.
Valium quickly formed a reputation as a stress buster and became popular among people of all ages and from all backgrounds. These pills were the subject of the book Valley of Dolls which became a bestseller in 1966. A year later, the Rolling Stones released a song called “Mother’s Little Helper” in which a housewife copes with her life by popping Valium tablets.
Diazepam, which is the generic name for Valium, has been created from a simplified version of Librium. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine-possessing sedative with anxiolytic, skeletal muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant and amnestic properties. It is commonly used to treat seizures, muscle spasms, anxiety and insomnia. Diazepam features in the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Essential Drugs List. It is one of the most prescribed medicines in the world since it deals with such a wide range of conditions. It is also used as a premedication for inducing sedation before some medical procedures.
Valium is also a benzodiazepine. It was initially marketed as a non-addictive drug having no side effects. However, it is now acknowledged as potentially very addictive and therefore should only be taken in small doses for a short period of time. In Australia, Diazepam is sold by companies like Valium, Antenex, Ducene and Valpam. Fifty per cent of diazepam prescriptions in Australia in 2002 were specifically for Valium. Diazepam is a tranquilizer and belongs to the benzodiazepine class of drug. It has proven helpful in treating anxiety and sleep disorders.
Though Valium is available over the counter and can easily be purchased, care must be taken that it is used very carefully and not abused. However, today Valium continues to help people combat stress and other psychological problems.
