Wella AG, earlier known as Wella, is a leading German hair cosmetic company that has been in existence for over a century now. In 1880, at the age of 26, a well-travelled German hairdresser Franz Ströher began by making hair wigs, artificial braids, toupees, plaits, buns and other hairpieces. This laid the foundation of the Wella group. Many innovations followed in the hair cosmetics range then, one of them being the introduction of the famous artificial waterproof tulle that held the wig in place. Soon, perming appliances and other hairdresser products were launched by Ströher’s sons with whose foresight the company expanded their product range and became the market leader in hair care and hair styling products. However, the name Wella was registered only in 1927. The company grew by leaps and bounds in the period from 1930-1950 when curls and perms were beginning to be recognised as the ‘dernier cri’. Soon, every salon swore by the Wella’s range of professional hairdressing products. Inspired by Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly, hair colours were launched by Wella in 1950 which became the latest vogue. Today, Wella’s products are not only used by salon professionals but are also widely popular household names.
