Typically, an armchair is nothing more than a chair with an armrest on each side. Historical records tell us that armchairs were invented and first used by the Egyptians. In early Egypt, they were used instead of ordinary chairs during important official coronations or religious ceremonies. The armchair was considered the highest seat and it was an honour to be allowed to sit on one. It was generally offered to the Pharaoh or to those recognized in war or government.
These chairs had beautiful ornate designs and were carved to be benches more than chairs. In later times, the Greeks designed and made the comfortable “klismos” with saber legs and curved seat supports and backs. This was followed by a sunken chair designed by the Etruscans and, much later, in the Renaissance period, the armchair made a fresh appearance when it was designed for royalty at court.
When a lord of a manor received visitors, he always sat in a large armchair while his wife sat in a side chair. In the mid-18th century, the French armchair began to be used by everyone – its use was not limited by rank or class. These French armchairs were designed for comfort rather than style and were called “bergères”. They were low and had full sides, which could either be caned or upholstered. This type of armchair featured a cushioned seat that could be pulled out at will.
The French also had Louis XIII and Louis XIV armchairs, distinctive for their baluster legs, aprons with a definite shape and slanting back. They were upholstered with tapestry or wool serge.
Finally, in the 20th century, the armchair became a piece of furniture that was designed with body support and comfort in mind. However, even today in formal dining rooms, you will may find an armchair at either end of the dining table for the host and hostess, while guests occupy side chairs!
These days, there are also recliners and massage armchairs that give support and offer health benefits to the user. Due to our highly stressful lives, these pieces of furniture are in great demand.
There are many reasons to buy an armchair: they are relaxing, comfortable, great for reducing stress, and offer back support.
