Bread, pies, tarts and cakes – whatever is your favourite food, baking pans make it easier to create these mouth-watering treats at home. Baking pans are important kitchen items. They come in various shapes and sizes, from a round cake pan to a loaf pan and a non-stick pan.
Baking has been an important part of human civilizations for thousands of years. The early Egyptians are believed to have made bread in 2600–2100 BC, learning the art from the Babylonians. Aristophanes, the famous Greek scholar, is believed to have created honey flans and tortes, while the first pastry cooks were employed by the Roman Emperor in the 4th century BC. Apparently, bakers enjoyed the status of freedmen in Rome, while all other traders were treated as slaves. In the 18th and 19th centuries, baking bread occurred only in wealthy households. A revolution in milling technology in the 1880s made white flour and white bread affordable for the rest of the population.
Nowadays, baking is made much easier with baking pans. They can be round, square or rectangular with straight sides, sometimes with a removable bottom to make lifting out cakes easier and sometimes with a lid. In aluminium pans, both the pan and lid are generally about 1.4mm to 2mm thick and in stainless steel pans, they are about 0.4mm to 0.7mm thick. These days, many pans have heat resistant handles.
There are many different sizes of baking pans available on the market, but for basic baking most people only require a cookie sheet or sheet pan and a deep baking pan for things like brownies and lasagne. Bakeware should be as durable as possible. Steel and aluminium baking pans do not bend easily and also distribute heat evenly. You could also try using two identical baking sheets and putting one on top of the other as this will prevent the bottom of the baked food from overcooking.
Since the baking pan can be used for baking many different kinds of food, different materials are recommended for different preparations. While a baking pan is a metal item, a baking dish is generally made of glass. A pie pan is usually metal while cookies are usually baked on a cookie sheet with no sides. Some of the latest types of baking pans are the silicone baking pans made of highly flexible polymer. These baking pans are non-stick and flexible. They can be put in the freezer, the microwave and the dishwasher, making it even quicker and easier to bake and store mouth-watering delicacies.
