Dining tables came into existence due to necessity and have gradually evolved into pieces of art. The word “table” is a combination of the Old English “tabele”, the French “table” and the Latin “tabula”.
Early dining tables were used by the Egyptians and were merely platforms made with the intention of keeping food off the floor. They later went a step further with smaller versions that were used for recreation and table top games.
For the Greeks and Romans, tables were strictly for dining purposes. They had to be big and sturdy to be able hold the weight of heavy vessels and tableware. Dining tables were made of stone, marble, metal or wood. They came in various shapes and sizes such as square, rectangular, oval or round. It was the Romans who introduced large rectangular tables to Italy, allowing a big family to enjoy a meal together at the table.
In the 18th century, Pembroke tables were very popular. These tables had an oval top with drop leaves that folded down on all sides. They remained popular into the 19th century. The cleverly designed tables could easily be transported outdoors due to their compactness. They were often used to serve tea in the garden and also for special occasions.
The Romans came up with yet another kind of dining table, this time in a semi-circular shape. Most of the tables at that time were utilitarian and had four legs that could sometimes fold inwards using hinges. Some of the dining tables included drawers to store cutlery.
Modern day dining tables are a tasteful combination of substance and style. In tight spaces or smaller homes, pedestal tables which stand on one leg are ideal. Pedestal tables make good freestanding tables and are great for outdoors as well. These tables can also be pushed against the wall when not in use to save space. Long tables are often seen in kitchens as well as dining rooms. Corner tables again make maximum use of available space.
Today, dining tables are often equipped with foldable extensions and sliding parts that can be folded and stored compactly when not in use. Some modern dining tables also feature a revolving disc at the centre of the table for easy distribution of food.
