A fry pan or frying pan is commonly used in the kitchens of homes and restaurants for preparing a variety of dishes. The process of frying adds to the crispiness and taste of food.
The standard diameter of this item of cookware ranges between eight and twelve inches. Frying pans usually have slanted sides and do not have a lid. They are shallow in depth and have a long handle for easy manoeuvring while in use. A variant on a frying pan with straight sides and a lid is usually referred to as a sauté pan.
Traditional frying pans were constructed from cast iron as the use of this material made them solid and durable for extensive use. However, copper frying pans were popularly used by ancient civilizations such as those in Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. They were probably used only in the preparation of grain dishes. These early frying pans evolved into the Spanish paella pan and the Italian padella pan.
Cast iron pans should be seasoned once before they are used and subsequently at regular intervals. Nowadays, you can choose fry pans made from a wide range of other materials such as aluminium, copper and stainless steel. These pans are also strong and long lasting. Very often Teflon coating is applied to the surface so that they become nonstick. Home users prefer nonstick fry pans but professional chefs tend not to find them so useful.
You can easily maintain and clean frying pans made of stainless steel or aluminium. There are some frying pans with dome covers that distribute the heat around the food using the principle of convection. Nowadays, most manufacturers offer these items of cookware made from anodized aluminium and clad steel alloy. Electric fry pans are also available. These cookware products can even be used for stewing and baking food items.
