A garden tiller or soil cultivator is a form of farming equipment used by gardeners and farmers to dig into the earth and turn over the organic materials and hardened surface dirt to prepare fresh soil for planting. Earlier tiller models used animal or human power, but modern tillers use gas or electricity powered engines to turn the blades or tines. The tines can be adjusted to reach the required depth.
There are different types of garden tillers available on the market to suit various farming and gardening needs. Your choice depends upon the gardening projects you wish to undertake and the condition of the ground that needs to be tilled.
A rotary tiller uses two sets of blades that are mounted either on the front or back of the tiller and are turned by an engine. Front-bladed tillers are perfect for medium-sized gardens with soft soil. With such a tiller, the tines are located under the motor and the wheels are at the back of the machine, which makes it easier to push the tiller.
A mini-cultivator may be the best choice for gardens that measure less than 1,000 square feet. These tillers are smaller versions of the full-sized front tine models. They are lighter in weight and portable. They have a smaller wheel base, which makes them easier to manoeuvre between garden rows. In comparison, the mini-cultivator is less expensive than the full-sized front tine tiller and is easier to store when not in use.
A rear line tiller has blades located at the back and wheels at the front. Some of these pieces of equipment may have standard rotating tines (SRTs), which means that the tines and wheels rotate in the same direction, or they may have counter rotating lines (CRTs). Such a tiller is ideal for breaking up new ground and maintaining gardens of any size and soil type.
A rear blade tiller is suitable for experienced users or those with larger commercial gardens. These tillers come with different attachments that help to blend the soil, create furrows for planting and build potato hills. During winter, they can double up as snow mowers too.
Depending upon the amount of land that needs to be tilled, the frequency of use, and the type of existing soil, you can choose to either buy or rent a tiller. The horsepower or HP of the machine is an important factor to be considered when selecting a garden tiller. More HP is needed for breaking new ground, while a five to six HP tiller is excellent for tilling a vegetable garden and flower beds. For heavy duty commercial work, a tiller with a higher horsepower would be a wise choice.
