The term “glass” refers to a transparent or translucent material, which is hard and brittle. There are various objects that are used in our daily lives that are made of glass. The term “glassware” typically refers to everything from glass vases and ornaments to various drinking vessels that are made of glass.
Glasses are among the most commonly used items of kitchenware. Popular glassware products include nested bowl sets, juicers, canisters, plates and dishes. Whether you are serving beer, wine, coffee, tea, coke, or even plain water, glasses and other items of glassware are useful in any modern kitchen.
The glasses used for serving water and other soft drinks are usually called tumblers. Usually, tumblers do not have stems like other glasses and are generally either short and chunky or tall and thin. The tall and thin ones can be used for drinking water or various fruit juices, while the short and chunky tumblers are often used to raise a toast with alcoholic beverages. Besides the tumblers, other types of glassware have three identifiable parts: the first being the bowl, followed by the stem and, finally, the foot or base.
With glassware, there are several types of glasses specifically designed to serve alcohol. When there is a party in the house, you can, for example, choose from a variety of wine glasses. Champagne is ideally served in a tulip-shaped glass with a deep cut at the bottom of the bowl. This glass is also called a champagne flute. A fine, old cut glass can be good enough to show the ruby colour of port wine. A beer mug or pint glass is usually made of thick glass, is heavier than a wine glass, and comes with a large handle.
You need to clean and maintain your glassware on a regular basis to remove the dust or dirt that may settle. As these objects are extremely brittle, you should avoid stacking your glasses one on top of the other.
