A garden hedge is a row of closely planted shrubs or bushes that creates fencing around the garden. To control the hedge’s growth, pruning shears or knives were used initially but this was a time-consuming task that required a lot of effort. A hedge is now more often cut with a hedge trimmer. Modern hedge trimmers are powerful tools that work efficiently and save a lot of time and effort.
Hedge trimmers are used to trim and maintain the existing shape and size of the shrub, remove dead branches, assist the growth of lush foliage and improve flowering. There are three types of hedge trimmers – electric hedge trimmers, battery-operated hedge trimmers (cordless hedge trimmers) and gasoline/petrol-powered hedge trimmers.
Electric hedge trimmers, as the name suggests, run on electricity and have an expansion cord. They are lightweight and don’t make much noise or emit exhaust fumes. These appliances are user-friendly and require low maintenance. Corded electric hedge trimmers, however, are restricted by cord length and require you to work within range of the power outlet. Battery-operated hedge trimmers, also known as cordless hedge trimmers, run on rechargeable batteries. They offer a good 45 minutes run-time per charge. These battery-operated cordless trimmers come with two rechargeable batteries. Since there are no cords for these appliances, your mobility is not restricted. They are convenient to use and easy to maintain. Petrol-powered hedge trimmers have an internal combustion engine that uses petrol and oil. They are very powerful and efficient but are heavier and require skilful handling.
The blades of hedge trimmers are available in three varieties. There are the double-sided hedge trimmers with blades on either side that are ideal for cutting chest-high hedges. The adjustable rear handles provide increased flexibility and better ergonomics. Single-sided hedge trimmers have long blades but only on one side and are good for cutting straight sections of the hedge. With one single sweep, you can trim the entire area with minimum effort. Pole hedge trimmers have an adjustable cutting bar and the option of controlling the speed, angle and reach of the trimmer. Pole hedge trimmers are ideal for cutting high, low as well as ground cover because of the adjustable cutter.
Most hedge trimmers have an integrated collector bag that sucks in all the waste into the bag and hence leaves no mess. Some hedge trimmers also have a vibration-damping system that minimises vibration around the handle and enables comfortable handling. Hedge trimmers are useful garden accessories that help you to maintain the garden so that it remains tidy and beautiful.
