In a world where time is money, it is not surprising that so much importance is given to a device that keeps us aware of the time. Wrist watches tell us the time wherever we go, and with the latest sophisticated designs, wrist watches have entered the world of fashion too.
A watch not only tells the time and also reflects the personality of the wearer, so buying the right watch is an important decision. There are different types of watches to suit different occasions including formal watches, casual watches and sports watches. Sometimes, men are casual about their watch and own only one. However, this can look out of place, especially when wearing a sports watch with a suit for example.
There are men who like their watch to perform its basic function of telling the time and no more. For them, any brand or price is suitable. There are also people for whom the timepiece has to reflect a lot more. It could be a style statement, a status symbol or even an investment.
When buying a watch, many factors need to be taken into account. If it’s your primary watch, it should be able to withstand daily wear and tear yet look sophisticated. A lot depends on your job – whether the watch is expected to weather the outdoors or snugly fit under a suit jacket in an office. If the watch is a particular brand it can be dressy enough for suits and casual enough for parties. Waterproof watches are also available for water-sport lovers.
With men, size is always important. A big watch face may not work for every male wrist. Bigger is not necessarily better and will depend on the style. The watch’s face is known as the crystal and is expected to protect the dial. There are three types of crystals in most watches: acrylic, mineral and sapphire. Acrylic is an inexpensive plastic. Mineral is hardy glass that’s seven times harder than acrylic to resist scratches. Sapphire is the most expensive – three times harder than crystal, it is scratch and shatterproof.
Ideally you should always own at least one quality watch, for example one with a mechanical movement against a quartz watch that would be suitable for daily use.
If a watch is to be an investment, the exorbitant prices for luxury watches can be worthwhile in the long run. They offer good resale value and, above all, they command respect.
