Ray Ban is a renowned manufacturer of sunglasses founded by Bausch and Lomb in 1937. Ray Ban sunglasses was created after lieutenant John MacCready reported permanent damages to his eyes following a balloon flying adventure in 1920. He asked Bausch and Lomb to create sunglasses that would protect his eyes and look stylish too. The new sunglasses created were patented by Bausch and Lomb in 1937.
Ray Ban developed a gold rimmed, tear drop shaped frame to cover a large part of an aviator’s face. This design was called “The Aviator” and became immensely popular. The aviators were designed to block out infra red and ultraviolet radiation. In the middle of 1937, Bausch and Lomb officially patented the design and began marketing the Aviator range of Ray Ban sunglasses. Later, the company tied up with Hollywood studios to promote the product in movies and soon enough, Hollywood movie stars began wearing them. This includes several stars such as Tom Cruise, Madonna, Jack Nicholson, James Belushi, Dan Akroyd and members of the band U2. Ray Ban sunglasses were featured in movies and music videos which lead to sales of over three hundred and fifty thousand Wayfarer sunglasses in 1983. By 1999, Bausch and Lomb sold the Ray Ban brand and patents to the Luxottica group of Italy.
In July of 2004, Ray Ban began partnering with the Honda F1 Racing team giving the brand immense popularity. The Ray Ban logo appears on the cockpit of the Honda F1 team cars. Drivers such as Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button sport the Ray Ban logo on their racing helmets. Ray Bans sunglasses are the few sunglass companies which provide users with prescription glasses built into the sunglasses. Users can have their sunglasses customised to incorporate prescription refractive indexes in their Ray Ban lenses.
Ever since its commercial launch, the Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses have become much-sought after the world over. Its immense popularity has led to the proliferation of counterfeiters Aviator sunglasses in the market.
Ray Ban sunglasses are available today in a wide variety of colours, frames and designs. They are available with polarised lenses as well. The dark green lens colours are immensely popular along with metal and plastic frames.
